St George’s Day is
celebrated on 23 April in the countries and regions which have St George as their
patron saint (England, Bulgaria, Portugal, Catalonia and Aragón amongst
others). St. George’s Day has been a feast day in England since the 14th
century though it is not a national holiday.
St George
was born in Turkey in 270 AD. He joined the Roman army but disagreed with the
Romans’ torture of Christians. He was beheaded for his beliefs on 23rd April,
303. He is always depicted as a knight on horseback carrying a shield with a
red cross (the emblem of the red cross on a white background is the flag of England
and part of the British flag).
One of
the best-known stories about Saint George is his fight with a dragon (a symbol
of evil) and now we are going to learn about the legend.
